Our diverse country India, has hundreds of language, few popular and few like Gondi, Malhar, Walmiki and others which are dying slowly. The two most popular language in north India are Hindi and English. But English has not originated in India, thus it is not an Indian language, they why are we so obsessed with English?

Many people have this misconception that people who speak fluent English are more sophisticated, more intelligent and is likely to do better in life. People see an English speaking person as very aspiring and cool. Yes, English is important in today’s globalized world. But is it really a parameter to judge someone’s intelligence? Is it okay to make fun of someone if their English is weak or if they mispronounce something or if their sentence is wrong?

Our obsession with English has lead us to speak and write more fluently in English than our native language. Very few millennial can barely write in their native language correctly. People bully and tease others if they are unable to speak English fluently or speak in their native language, labelling them as uneducated. Human nature has been indulged in too much hatred, so we just try to bring down others in any way possible.

There are just handful people in India who can speak Sanskrit fluently. Your obsession with English is killing your own culture and language. There is no harm in speaking a foreign language but the kind of environment that has been created around English and the hype around is toxic. Learning a new language is always great but staying connected to your root is essential for your well being.

I am a Hindi speaking girl, writing this blog in English is an example of how much we are now obsessed with English. If I would have written it in Hindi, 70% of you couldn’t understand it.

As now we are also talking so much about mental health, bullying someone on the basis of this can hamper their mental health. So kindly stop!

Let us together embrace our language and try to be less judgemental and have more empathy. Be proud of where you come from.

THANKYOU
